Backyard Tips

Today's Tip

1) When starting your own chicken flock, read, read, read as much as you can prior to getting them!  See my post that mentions the book, "Living with Chickens".

2) If building a chicken coop, it's good to have it up off the ground.  This provides an extra place for the chickens to seek cover from weather especially the heat if there is no shade in the chicken yard.

3) Once your chicken coop and fenced in yard is complete, I highly advise that you string up a heavy duty fishing line from the roof of the coop to each fence post.  This keeps out the hawks and owls and you hardly notice it.  I will post a picture for reference.  (note, if you live in snow country, snow will cling to the line and you will need to knock it off because it will stretch the line).
